Journalist: How are the freshwater resources of the countries along the “Belt and Road”?
Prof. Ng, Tat-yung:
As the core resource for human development, water has a significant impact to the economy and politics of any region. Countries along the “Belt and Road” including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Yemen, Jordan, Lebanon, Uzbekistan, Palestine, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Afghanistan are all facing the problems of water safety and water scarcity. In 2015, their per capita renewable inland freshwater resources were only 71% of the world average, and the low productivity of water and large agricultural water consumption are still acute problems. At the same time, global warming and population growth are two unavoidable major challenges which always accompany with the global water resources problem. Water safety would become a critical strategic issue for countries along the “Belt and Road”.
Journalist: How are China’s freshwater resources?
Prof. Ng, Tat-yung:
According to China Environmental Bulletin 2013 released by Ministry of Environmental Protection in May 2014, water safety is becoming a “serious problem” for China. Those were red alerts: half of the top 10 water systems in the country were polluted; the water quality of 60% of the underground water was poor or extremely poor; 40% of the state-controlled key lakes were polluted; 17 out of the 31 large freshwater lakes were polluted; among the 9 important bays, the water quality of Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay and Jiaozhou Bay was poor, and that of Yangtze Estuary, Hangzhou Bay, Minjiang Estuary and Pearl River Estuary was extremely poor; among 657 cities nationwide, more than 300 cities belonged to “water scarcity” and “serious water scarcity” according to the standard set by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme.
Journalist: What’s the impact of atmospheric water generation to the “Belt and Road” initiative?
Prof. Ng, Tat-yung:
1. Atmospheric water generation can solve the national water resources problem and contributes to the “Belt and Road” construction and development.
While the world is facing serious problems on water pollution and scarcity, the technology using in atmospheric water generators would inevitably be widely used in the market. The market of atmospheric water generator is showing a good momentum of development, and it would be an inevitable trend to large-scale, industrialized, popular and internationalized development. It is suggested to develop the upstream and downstream of industry chain of atmospheric water generation through the integration of civil and military development for building the world’s largest production base of atmospheric water generators in China to meet the demand of the future market; to seize the opportunities on domestic supplies and overseas sales; to solve the national crisis on water resources; and to contribute to the development of the “Belt and Road” initiative.
2. Work together to build a “Belt and Road” community of common destiny on water resources.
Among the 65 countries covered in the “Belt and Road” initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping, around 70 percent of them is with serious water scarcity. These countries and regions along the “Belt and Road” are facing more serious problems on water safety than the rest of the world and they urgently required solutions for the crisis on water resources. This is a good timing for the atmospheric water generation industry of China rising globally to solve the internal water pollution and scarcity problems; to drive its industrial economic development; to export industry and brands of atmospheric water generation; to layout China’s “Silk Road on Land and Sea”; to facilitate the implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative; and to contribute to the building of the “Belt and Road” community of common destiny on water resources.
Journalist: What is the impact of atmospheric water generation on sustainable development of global water resources?
Prof. Ng, Tat-yung:
1. Water resources problem has become a top international topic. Water resources are the “connector” and “motivator” for the driving and achieving of sustainable economic development. It plays an important role in facing economic innovation, responding to the common challenges of mankind, and achieving sustainable development;
